(MOUNT VERNON, IND. – November 8, 2013) – On Thursday afternoon, the employees of The Babcock & Wilcox Company’s (B&W) Mount Vernon facility celebrated the service of 26 of their coworkers who are U.S. military veterans. On hand for the celebration was Indiana Governor Mike Pence, as well as Indiana State Representative Wendy McNamara.

“We’re extremely proud of our employees who are veterans and wanted to honor their service to our country,” said Michael Keene, General Manager of the B&W Mount Vernon facility. “Their service is a reminder of the significance of the high-precision work we do in helping to keep our nation secure, as well as the importance of our ultimate customers – the men and women who serve aboard B&W-powered submarines and aircraft carriers.”

B&W’s Mount Vernon site manufactures heavy components for naval nuclear reactors used in submarines and aircraft carriers. The facility also supports B&W’s work on commercial clean energy technologies such as the B&W mPower™ small modular reactor.

Keene said he and the employees were pleased that Gov. Pence and Rep. McNamara were able to attend the celebration and help honor B&W’s veterans during a recognition ceremony in which each veteran was presented with a commemorative plaque.

Following the ceremony, Gov. Pence had the opportunity to take a brief tour of the facility. He and B&W’s local leadership also discussed the importance of advancing the state’s career and technical services education to B&W’s current and future business needs.

Many of the facility’s jobs are highly-skilled technical positions, such as fabricator welders, millwrights, CMS technical specialists and electricians. B&W currently has approximately 10 open positions and expects its needs for technical workers to increase over the next decade.
