Power Your Career

The safety of our employees, members of the public, and the environment is our first priority.

We have an Environment, Health and Safety Mission Statement that is reviewed and signed by our President annually.

Regulatory Compliance

BWXT holds two facility-specific Class IB licenses with the CNSC, both of which expire on December 31, 2030. We participate in annual meetings with the CNSC.

We are subject to inspection by numerous regulatory agencies, including Canada’s nuclear regulator, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). We submit Annual Compliance Reports to the CNSC outlining detailed performance data to demonstrate our compliance with the Nuclear Safety and Control Act. All of these documents are available on our website.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a public meeting the week of May 25, 2026, in Peterborough and/or virtually, where BWXT will provide a mid-term update on
licensed activities at the Toronto and Peterborough facilities.

Environmental Monitoring & Reports:

At our facilities in Peterborough and Toronto, emissions are measured to ensure we are operating in a safe and responsible manner.

In Toronto, we monitor air, water and soil emissions for uranium. In Peterborough, we monitor air, water and soil emissions for uranium and beryllium. Monitoring results show that our facilities have very low emissions.

In addition to our own sampling, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has their own Independent Environmental Monitoring Program. The CNSC’s program verifies that the public and environment surrounding our Peterborough and Toronto facilities are protected and indicates there are no expected health impacts.

We have additional environmental reports available, including summaries of our Safety Analysis Reports and Preliminary Decommissioning Plans, as well as Environmental Dashboards, Environmental Risk Assessments, and ESDM tables.

Did you know? We have an Environment, Health and Safety Mission Statement that is reviewed and signed by our President annually.

Emergency Response:

To ensure we are prepared, we perform emergency response drills in Toronto and Peterborough on a regular basis. Local emergency services are involved in drills and trained to ensure they have key information related to our facilities. Employees are also trained on their role in an emergency to ensure a coordinated response.

BWXT has a comprehensive emergency plan in plan for each location, including established prevention programs. Summary documents of our Emergency and Fire Protection Plans are available on our website.
