(LYNCHBURG, Va. – May 28, 2025) – BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: BWXT) announced today that Thomas Burns, Jr. will assume the role of president and program manager for BWXT’s joint venture for the U.S. Department of Energy’s liquid waste cleanup contract at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.
Burns is currently the vice president and chief engineer on BWXT’s Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) joint venture, which also includes Amentum and Fluor. Before this role, he was chief engineer for BWXT’s Technical Services Group and held senior leadership positions with Parsons and the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board. Burns has more than 25 years of nuclear and engineering experience in the management, design and construction and operation of complex nuclear material processing and waste disposition facilities. Burns earned his Ph.D., master’s, and bachelor’s degrees in nuclear engineering from the University of Virginia.
“Since joining BWXT, Tom has proven to be an exceptional talent ideally suited for this important role for our DOE customer,” said Heatherly Dukes, Technical Services Group president. “Our SRMC joint venture at the Savannah River Site has delivered a steady stream of safety and operational accomplishments since we assumed the liquid waste contract in 2022. Tom has played a vital role in our efforts there, and we look forward to the company’s continued success under his leadership. We also wish Dave Olson, the departing president and program manager, all the best in his retirement and thank him for expertly guiding SRMC in our first three years on the project.”
Since SRMC assumed the liquid waste contract at SRS in 2022, it has:
- Worked more than 21 million hours without injury that’s caused a missed workday.
- Ensured all facilities are operating safely, with disciplined operations and greater efficiency and processed more than 6 million gallons of salt waste.
- Met five key regulatory milestones to remove waste from and clean tanks to ready them for operational closure.
“We are in the business of immobilizing liquid waste to protect people, the plant and the environment,” Burns said. “SRMC is the international model for the work we do, how to conduct it safely, and how to ensure the government gets the best value for the funding. I look forward to continuing to work alongside our employees to execute our mission with excellence.”
Burns becomes president and program manager on June 7. For more detailed information, see SRMC’s news release.
