Environmental Management and Facility Decommissioning

BWXT is a leader in environmental remediation and decommissioning, significantly contributing to historic environmental cleanup operations around the nation. We are actively involved in U.S. DOE Environmental Management projects, focused on removing legacy materials from sites that housed high-consequence operations, primarily during the Cold War era.

Relevant Operations:  

  • Lead partner on both U.S. DOE high level liquid waste cleanup contracts.  
  • Lead partner at the nation’s primary facility for maintaining the safety, security and effectiveness of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile. 
  • Processed millions of gallons of tank farm liquid waste   
  • Dispositioned and removed more than 800 facilities and structures  
  • Retrieved, characterized, treated and shipped 65,000 cubic meters of stored transuranic and mixed low-level contaminated waste out of Idaho, U.S.  
  • Dispositioned 1.3 million curies of tritium. 
  • First U.S. company to successfully complete major D&D released for unrestricted use at our commercial nuclear fuel fabrication facility. 
  • Decommissioned three nuclear test reactors.
