In addition to BWXT’s environmental program, which demonstrates that the public and the environment are protected from emissions related to our facility’s activities, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) conducts their own Independent Environmental Monitoring Program (IEMP) to verify that the public and the environment around licensed nuclear facilities are safe.
The IEMP involves taking samples from public areas around facilities and measuring and analyzing the amount of radiological and hazardous substances in those samples. CNSC staff then collect the samples and send them to their laboratory for testing and analysis.
CNSC has made available the results of their 2024 IEMP sampling results from areas around our Peterborough facility at 1160 Monaghan Road. The CNSC sampled air, water, soil and food from publicly accessible areas around our facility.
As noted by the CNSC, “IEMP results from 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2024 are consistent with the results submitted by BWXT, supporting our assessment that the licensee’s environmental protection program is effective. The results add to the body of evidence that people and the environment in the vicinity of the BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. – Peterborough are protected and that there are no anticipated health impacts from the operation of the facilities on the site.”
The results are available on the CNSC’s website here: IEMP for BWXT Peterborough.
