B&W Announces Innovation Partners in Pursuit of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.’s Nuclear Laboratories

26 November 2013

(CHARLOTTE, N.C. – November 26, 2013) – The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (NYSE:BWC) is pleased to announce a teaming arrangement with Cavendish Nuclear Ltd. (Cavendish Nuclear) and Battelle in pursuit of the Government Owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) contract for managing Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.’s (AECL) Nuclear Laboratories.

At a reception held in Petawawa, Ontario, on November 19, Ken Camplin, Vice President of Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Group, Inc. (B&W TSG) was joined by Andrew Wettern, Business Development Director for Cavendish Nuclear, and Dr. Ron Townsend, Executive Vice President of Global Laboratory Operations for Battelle, to announce the new partnership and address municipal and community leaders along with members of the local media.

“We believe this team has the vast experience necessary to ensure a strong future for Canada's Nuclear Laboratories,” said George Dudich, President, B&W TSG. “This team offers world-class capabilities and valuable experiences gained from work in North America and the United Kingdom, and with our focus on growth in science and technology, our team offers an unrivaled track record of innovation.”

B&W’s roots in Canada date back to 1844 in Cambridge, Ontario, where B&W Canada Ltd. (B&W Canada) is headquartered. Since the 1950s, B&W Canada has designed and supplied  305 nuclear steam generators, including 259 CANDU steam generators (both OEM and replacement) for AECL’s CANDU nuclear plants in Canada and internationally. Complementing B&W's heritage in Canada and with Chalk River Laboratories, B&W supports the U.S. Department of Energy as a primary provider of contract services including national laboratory management, nuclear operations, infrastructure modernization, and environmental restoration and management.

B&W is a leading energy technology company that has pioneered innovative nuclear technologies such as its mPower™ small modular reactor and also provides technical services to government customers for safely operating nuclear facilities and sites, including nuclear laboratories. “We believe the key to success at Canada’s Nuclear Laboratories is executing science and technology and growing the research and development portfolio,” stated Camplin.

Cavendish Nuclear, headquartered in the United Kingdom (U.K.), is a world leader in the decommissioning and clean-up of nuclear sites similar to AECL’s Chalk River National Laboratory (CRNL). Cavendish Nuclear is the largest nuclear site management, engineering and support services contractor in the U.K., with nuclear site licensee experience at Harwell, Winfrith and Dounreay in England and Scotland.  Cavendish Nuclear brings core competencies in eliminating legacy environmental liabilities. “We are delighted to join up with world class nuclear operations and lab management partners to both clean up the past and pave a path for the future,” said Wettern.

With a focus on research and development, Battelle, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, is an international science and technology enterprise with a management role at seven national laboratories. Battelle and B&W’s relationship stems back over 50 years and includes collaboration at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory, which are relevant to missions and challenges presented at AECL’s CRNL. “Canada’s Nuclear Laboratories are held in high regard by the international community, and have a rich history in the development of the nuclear industry. We’re eager to partner with this team to provide a confident and secure future for Chalk River,” stated Townsend. “Battelle is all in.”
