B&W Successfully Ships Steam Generators to FirstEnergy's Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station

22 October 2013

(CHARLOTTE, N.C. – October 22, 2013) – The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (NYSE:BWC) announced today that its subsidiary, Babcock & Wilcox Canada Ltd. (B&W Canada), has successfully shipped two replacement steam generators for FirstEnergy’s Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio.

The delivery of the 470-ton steam generators comes after an extensive six-year planning and manufacturing process allowing for delivery several months ahead of the spring 2014 refueling outage when the steam generators will be installed. The units were designed and manufactured in B&W Canada’s Cambridge, Ontario facility, which houses North America’s largest clean room for nuclear component assembly.

With more than 50 years of experience in the design and supply of nuclear steam generators, the two units for FirstEnergy bring B&W’s total number of supplied steam generators to 305 for nuclear utilities worldwide.

“Our depth of experience and expertise in commercial nuclear equipment design and supply makes us a perfect fit to respond to the needs of an aging nuclear fleet,” said Joe Zwetolitz, President, B&W Nuclear Energy, Inc. “We worked collaboratively with FirstEnergy for the entire duration of this project and are pleased to have supplied these units, which will contribute to the long term operation of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station.”

Having supplied more than 1,300 heavy nuclear components worldwide, B&W is the only heavy nuclear component manufacturer in North America. An innovative supplier of solutions for the worldwide commercial nuclear market, B&W offers a full spectrum of services for its commercial nuclear customers, including: component design, project management, outage inspection and maintenance services, precision manufacturing, special tooling development and a fleet of comprehensive in-house engineering services.
