B&W Granted Contract Extension at Department of Energy's Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project
The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (NYSE:BWC) announced today that its subsidiary Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Group, Inc. (B&W TSG) has been notified of a contract extension for waste cleanup work at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project (AMWTP) near Idaho Falls, Idaho. B&W TSG is a team member of Bechtel BWXT Idaho, LLC, which manages and operates AMWTP. The contract has been extended for a six-month period, through March 31, 2011, with an option for another extension through Sept. 30, 2011.
AMWTP prepares transuranic waste stored at the DOE's Idaho site for shipment and final disposal at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico. To date, more than 34,000 cubic meters of transuranic waste has been shipped from Idaho to WIPP for disposal.
"B&W is appreciative of the DOE's continued confidence in us to effectively execute the important work at this project," said S. Robert Cochran, B&W TSG President. "We are committed to continue working safely as we make further progress in cleaning up the Idaho site."
In 2009, DOE approved AMWTP as an official "STAR" site, the highest achievement level in the DOE's Voluntary Protection Program that promotes safety and health excellence at its contractor sites. To date, AMWTP employees have worked 10.5 million hours without a lost-time injury. AMWTP's safety accomplishments have also been recognized by the National Safety Council with the council's Occupational Excellence Award, Perfect Record Award Application, Safety Leadership Award for achieving five-consecutive years without occupational injury or illness, and Million Work Hours Award for completing at least one million work hours without occupational injury or illness.
