Corporate Citizenship

At BWXT, our culture is built on core values - including honesty, integrity, safety, quality, innovation and stewardship - that guide all of our actions.

We are committed to conducting our business in a sustainable, socially-responsible and ethical manner; providing good working conditions and eliminating workplace injuries; reducing our carbon footprint; and lowering operating costs by actively managing and reducing energy usage, waste generation and greenhouse gas emissions.

We are also dedicated to the long-term well-being of the facilities we own and operate, the communities in which we operate and the environment that surrounds them all.

Sustainability

At BWXT, innovation is at the heart of everything we do, and our sustainability efforts are no exception. Through our business strategy and manufacturing innovations, we are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint by reducing our energy consumption (our major source of greenhouse gas emissions), resource use and waste generation. We believe that economic, environmental and social objectives can be achieved simultaneously and that the benefits we provide to our customers, employees and communities will ultimately accrue to us and our shareholders.

NFS works closely with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to limit negative radiological, chemical and other hazards to the environment, its workers and the public. Our aim is to keep hazard levels “as low as reasonably achievable” (ALARA).

NFS is one of the most highly regulated and inspected plant facilities in the world. The NRC has stationed one full-time, independent NRC inspector at the plant because of NFS’ important, strategic mission and because of its use of High-Enriched Uranium, chemicals, and gasses. The NRC inspector reviews and oversees the environmental and safety performance of our workers and equipment.

People Strong, Innovation Driven

These words embody who we are as a company. At BWXT, we trace our history to the invention of the water tube boiler in 1856. In the following decades, we provided boiler equipment to power the New York subway system as well as military and commercial ships. After World War II, we designed and fabricated components for the first nuclear-powered submarine, and we continue to supply nuclear propulsion systems to the U.S. Navy today.

We have continued to build on our steam generator and nuclear expertise to enhance our offerings to existing government and commercial customers. Today, we are designing nuclear thermal propulsion systems for NASA and introducing a new medical radioisotope technology that will provide a stable supply of molybdenum-99 for use in medical diagnostic imaging while mitigating radioactive waste streams and nuclear proliferation concerns in the existing supply chain.

Our innovative spirit drives us to develop new technologies that benefit our customers, strengthen our business, and enhance our lives.

Nuclear Leadership

BWXT has a unique and leading role in the nuclear industry. The products we deliver to our government and commercial customers provide secure and reliable energy. One of nuclear energy’s greatest assets as a clean energy source include its ability to provide long-lasting electricity to millions of homes in North America alone with near-zero carbon emissions

We see the potential that nuclear energy has to power large cities, communities and transportation systems, and we recognize nuclear technology’s current and potential influence on modern medicine. We also contribute to a greener environment through the environmental cleanup services we provide for U.S. Department of Energy Environmental Management projects.

Our achievements in the Canadian nuclear industry demonstrate how economic and environmental sustainability can be aligned. In 2017, we invested in additional nuclear service capabilities to support Ontario as the first jurisdiction in North America to fully eliminate coal as a source of electricity generation. BWXT Canada’s roles in Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington Refurbishment and Bruce Power’s Life Extension Project are indicative of our clean energy commitment.
