Nuclear Fuel

Nuclear Fuel

BWXT owns and operates the only two commercial sites licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to possess and process highly enriched uranium.

Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. (NFS), a subsidiary of BWXT located in Erwin, Tenn., operates a uranium fuel materials production facility to support America's fleet of nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers. It also converts Cold War-era government stockpiles of highly enriched uranium into material suitable for further processing into commercial nuclear reactor fuel.

BWXT’s Lynchburg, Va. facility also performs downblending and recovery of enriched uranium. Read more about BWXT's nuclear non-proliferation and fuel processing work.

In addition, we are the only domestic supplier of research reactor fuel elements for colleges, universities and national laboratories. Read more about BWXT's research and test reactors program.
