Safety Culture Takes Center Stage at B&W Global Leadership Conference

23 May 2013

The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (NYSE: BWC) highlighted the importance of a strong safety culture at its recent Global Leadership Conference. Key B&W corporate and business unit leaders from locations in the U.S. and Canada gathered in Charlotte, N.C., to learn more about the organization's focus on safety culture.

Safety culture encompasses the core values and behaviors of an organization resulting from a collective commitment by leaders and individuals to emphasize safety over competing priorities. Discussions this week centered on the attributes of a strong safety culture and reinforcing a Safety Conscious Work Environment throughout the organization, in which all employees feel free to raise issues, and those issues are resolved with commitment, respect and timeliness.

B&W's Chief Executive Officer E. James Ferland stressed the importance of B&W's leadership demonstrating a strong safety culture, even in non-nuclear business functions. "Leaders have a responsibility to cultivate a positive safety culture, motivating the entire workforce to focus on principles that will permeate all of B&W's operations. This is central to our business strategy."

The three day Global Leadership Conference concluded Wednesday, providing the leadership team with means and methods to communicate B&W's strategy corporate-wide, with an emphasis on keeping safety culture at the forefront of B&W's operations.
