B&W Subsidiary Awarded $170 Million Boiler and Environmental Contract for Denmark Waste-to-Energy Plant

17 October 2012

The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (NYSE: BWC) announced today that Babcock & Wilcox Vølund A/S (B&W Vølund), a Denmark-based subsidiary in its power generation segment, was awarded a contract worth more than $170 million to design and supply a waste-to-energy boiler, environmental controls and other equipment for the new Amager Bakke waste-to-energy power plant to be built near Copenhagen, Denmark. The plant will be jointly owned by five Copenhagen-area municipalities.

B&W Vølund's scope includes the design and supply of the plant's firing equipment, boiler, DynaGrate®, combustion- and energy-control system, slag and ash-handling equipment and environmental equipment, including an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) for the control of particulate emissions and a selective catalytic reduction system (SCR) for the control of nitrogen oxides (NOx).

"This is an exciting project that will be among the largest and most efficient plants of its type in Europe," said J. Randall Data, Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc. President and Chief Operating Officer. "We're thankful to the municipalities of Copenhagen, Dragør, Frederiksberg, Hvidovre and Tårnby for selecting a B&W company for this important project."

The state-of-the-art plant will be designed with two fuel lines, and a total combustion capacity of 70 tons of municipal solid waste per hour. The plant's owners estimate it will reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 107,000 tons annually, compared to a traditional coal-fired plant.

The facility is planned to be completed in spring 2016 with the first line to be commissioned in late 2016.
