Generation mPower Announces Two New Utility Members to Industry Advisory Council

11 July 2012

Generation mPower LLC (GmP) has added two new member utilities to its Industry Advisory Council (IAC) that provides expert review, insights and feedback regarding licensing and design activities for the B&W mPower™ small modular reactor (SMR). The new members are JEA, located in Jacksonville, Fla., and Ontario Power Generation (OPG), located in Canada.

"The addition of these new companies to the council brings its membership to 29 utilities and demonstrates the continued interest that GmP is experiencing from both domestic and international utilities in our SMR program," said Christofer M. Mowry, President of Babcock & Wilcox mPower, Inc. and President and CEO of GmP. "The utility industry recognizes that SMRs are a compelling solution for generating emissions-free power in a cost-competitive manner. We welcome the valuable insights that will be gained from JEA and OPG as we move forward with plans to deploy the first B&W mPower reactor."

Mowry continued, "We believe that industry and utility support is very important to our application for the U.S. Department of Energy's Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for their cost-sharing program for the development of SMR technology."

The IAC has been meeting regularly for more than two-and-a-half years. The input that has been received from the member utilities has been instrumental in guiding the B&W mPower reactor design and testing work that has already been completed. Fifteen of the IAC utility members also belong to the Generation mPower Industry Consortium, which is dedicated to addressing and influencing the proper regulatory framework, design requirements and licensing infrastructure necessary to support the construction of a practical SMR plant featuring the B&W mPower reactor.
